EAST DENNIS, MASS. — Over two days, February 27 and 28, Eldred’s conducted its Winter Marine Sale, featuring nautical instruments, whaling artifacts, ship paintings and other maritime items. Both offered on the first day, two lots tied to become the sale’s overall highest achievers. One, a 1993 ship portrait, “Victoria, View from Songhee Point, 1891” by John Stobart (pictured) sailed past its $25/35,000 estimate to achieve the realized price of $69,300 with the buyer’s premium. The other lot achieving that price was a cast iron mermaid ship’s wheel bracket helm dated toward the end of the Nineteenth or early Twentieth Century. The mermaid figure nearly reached its high estimate, which was $70,000. Further exploration of the Winter Marine Sale will be in a future issue.
