Mary Fedden artworks sell for thousands – Antique Collecting

Two artworks by one of Britain’s leading 20th-century artists have sold for a total of £11,000 at auction.

Mary Fedden R.A (British, 1915-2012) was born in Bristol and as a teenager attended Slade School of Fine Arts in London which she described as ‘heaven’.  She later went on to design stage sets for Sadler’s Wells Theatre.  After the war, she went on to develop her style under the influence of Matisse and Braque specialising in still life and flower studies.

Her oeuvre is bold, expressive, and vivid with often quirky elements.  In 1956 she became a member of the London Group and her work can be found in numerous private and public collections, including the late Queen, The Royal Academy, and the Government Art Collection.

Her work is highly sought after today by connoisseurs.

The two works consigned to Cotswold auctioneers Kinghams comprised a gouache titled The Black Horse and a larger oil titled Jasmine & Moths.  Both were sourced from the same Cotswold-based private collector and estimated at £1,500-2,000 and £3,000-5,000 respectively.  Following extensive pre-sale interest, the Black Horse totalled £3,120 and Moths £7,800.

Both were bought by private UK-based collectors.
