In June 2023, Jessica Vincent bought a vase at a Goodwill store in Virginia for $3.99, according to The Associated Press. The vase stood out partly due to its painted glass and swirling colors. In addition, the vase had “Murano” printed on the bottom of it.

Murano refers to an island in Venice, Italy, known for its glasswork. Dating back to the 13th century, crystal chandeliers, mirror frames, and many other glass pieces were produced in Murano.

Vincent shared photos of her vase with Facebook groups for glass art. She also joined a private group for Murano glass pieces, which helped her learn more about her vase. One of the Murano glass Facebook group members noted that Vincent’s vase was “very rare.” This group member also pointed out that “every collector would love to have [that vase].”

Ultimately, Vincent discovered that her vase was produced by the globally recognized glass company Venini and designed by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. The vase was part of a series produced in 1942.

Two Italian glass specialists traveled to Virginia to evaluate the vase. They verified the vase’s authenticity and found that the piece was in near-perfect condition.

Following her discovery, Vincent put the vase up for auction. And on December 13, 2023, a private collector bought the vase at auction for $107,100. Vincent plans to use most of the money from the sale to cover the cost of an HVAC system for a farmhouse that she recently purchased.
