How do you tell if you found a stoneware treasure? Let us show you.

I love stoneware. I love the simplicity of the designs, the subtle decorative details, the colors, the glazes, and the shapes. I especially love the advertising labels so often stamped onto the sides. Before the days of refrigeration, stoneware was the way to keep your dairy cool and unspoiled. In addition to being practical, various stoneware artisans and manufacturers made sure that their products came with style too. There’s just something about the simple yet elegant design of stoneware that makes it so exciting. And stoneware proves that an item doesn’t need to be flashy to be beautiful.

This stoneware crock immediately caught my eye.

Although you can often catch me snooping around in the housewares section of the thrift store, I’ve never found a piece of stoneware that looks this beautiful and costs so little! In addition to the beautiful glaze, I was especially excited to see a mark on the bottom of this piece. Naturally, I pulled out my WorthPoint App to see what I could find.

To add even more joy to my shopping trip, I stumbled upon a second piece of stoneware on my way to the checkout line. It’s very different from my first discovery, so make sure you stick around to the end of the video for a side-by-side comparison, especially if you’ve ever wondered how to tell the difference between authentic stoneware and an imitation piece.

Take a look at the second piece of stoneware I found. There are both obvious and subtle differences that give you clues about their potential value.

Ultimately, I just had to buy both pieces, even though I’m pretty sure that only one is authentic. They were both too cool to pass up, which is exactly what their original makers were going for.
