Hyde Park Country Auctions in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., concluded March with its Decorative Arts, Nautical, Country, Ephemera, Photos auction on March 30. The 419-lot sale featured items from local estates, including part two of the nautical collection from Red Hook, N.Y., native Jeff Raymond. The auction showcased a wide range of items, from furniture and sterling silver to artwork and advertising memorabilia, catering to both novice and experienced collectors.
The top lot of the sale was a pair of George Hunzinger lollipop chairs, circa 1880, which sold for $2,000. One chair featured a Hunzinger-patented rocking mechanism, while the other bore a partial label. These chairs highlighted the sale’s focus on unique and historically significant furniture. Other furniture lots included two early rabbit ear side chairs ($25), a wrought iron patio table with acorn and leaf-patterned chairs ($113), an upholstered parlor chair and ottoman ($281), and a Sheraton-style dining set with eight chairs ($469).
Sterling silver was another strong category, with 23 lots drawing competitive bidding. A 51-piece Reed & Barton silverware set in the Marlborough pattern led the group at $1,500. Other notable silver items included a Tiffany & Co. Art Deco bowl ($625), four sterling silver and lead pens ($88), a Gorham executive’s spinning top ($100), and a unique “Alice in Daliland” bell ($375).
Lighting fixtures also performed well, with 22 lots selling for prices ranging from $31 to $1,500. The latter was achieved by a bronze tree trunk lamp base from the early 1900s, which retained its original wiring. Five Tiffany-style slag glass lamps sold for more modest prices, including a Dragonfly-patterned shade ($188) and a Wisteria-patterned shade ($156).
Artwork was another highlight, with 28 lots selling for $13 to $1,500. A framed Italian pietra dura image on slate, likely a Grand Tour souvenir, sold for $1,500, five times its estimate. Other notable pieces included an oil painting by Italian artist Arrigo Ghendini ($625) and a late 19th-century oil portrait of Persian kittens ($531).
Advertising memorabilia also attracted attention, with a Willys Jeep clock leading the category at $875. Provenance traced it to the family of Robert Frizzell, a Navy veteran and former auto dealer. Other advertising lots included wooden signs ($25) and a collection of 175 advertising cards ($313).
Sewing materials and collectible cards rounded out the sale. A group of 14K gold thimbles and sewing notions sold for $563, while a set of 300 postcards fetched $344. The postcards were organized by themes such as holidays, Hudson Valley towns, and European street scenes.
The auction demonstrated the continued appeal of antique and vintage items, with strong results across diverse categories. Hyde Park Country Auctions’ next event, the Country Americana & Fine Decorative Arts sale, is scheduled for June 1.
