At over four-foot wide an oil painting, after Caravaggio of The Cardsharps, is one of the larger pictures in an upcoming Dorset auction.
The original Cardsharps dates to circa 1594, and is in the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth. This later copy going under the Charterhouse gavel, is estimated at £8,000-10,000.
Elsewhere in the sale, and more modern with a modest estimate, is lithograph by Joe Tilson RA. Tilson, born in London 1928, is one of the leading figures associated with the British Pop Art movement. Titled Eye Mantra and estimated at £500-800, it is an etching and aquatint in colours with string and metal on wove paper.
“There is plenty of choice from 18th-century pictures through to modern abstract art,” commented auctioneer Richard Bromell. “However, for me, it is a charming watercolour drawing of the parade in Sherborne from 1881 which I would most like to take home.” The painting has an estimate of £100-£150.
The three-day sale takes place on July 5, 6 and 7 in Sherborne.
