Once again, record auction prices have risen up, up, and away to crown the Man of Steel’s first appearance as the most valuable comic book. On April 6, 2024, a copy of the 1938 Action Comics #1 was sold for $6 million, smashing prior sales for previous Superman comics and comic books overall.

With a CGC grading of 8.5, this comic book’s auction supersedes the price and condition of the private $5.3 million sale of a 1939 CGC 8.0 issue of Superman #1, which was most recently the most expensive comic book. Before that, the auction of Marvel Comics’s 1962 Amazing Fantasy #15—featuring Spider-Man’s first appearance—reigned supreme at $5.3 million.

As shown in CGC Comic’s updated list of the most expensive comic books, record-breaking comic book sales are increasing in frequency, with many of the highest auction sales occurring in the last four years. Since CGC graded and encapsulated the first comic book in 1999, more and more collectors are getting the service done. And now, highly graded comic books that were once less than a dollar are regularly selling for six and seven figures. Ventures like the acquisition of JSA by CCG (CGC’s parent company) may result in even more graded comics in the market.
