Thomas Cornell, the longtime owner and auctioneer of Thos. Cornell Galleries in Bellport, N.Y., conducted his final auction on August 15, 2024, marking the end of his 25-year tenure. The auction house was subsequently acquired by new co-owners Roy Braeger and Carlo Libaridian, who rebranded the business as Cornell Auctions, Objects & Trade and began hosting auctions in September 2024. The duo introduced themselves and shared insights into their vision for the future of the auction house, as well as the changes they’ve implemented since taking over.
Meet the New Owners
Roy Braeger, a distinguished event designer and entrepreneur, is the founder of Roy Braeger Design in New York City. With a career spanning high-profile collaborations with brands like Ferrari, Microsoft, Lexus, and HBO’s Veep, Braeger has built a reputation for his innovative approach and meticulous attention to detail. His transition into the auction world reflects his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. As co-owner of Cornell Auctions, he brings his expertise in high-end interior design and curation, aiming to elevate the auction experience for clients.
Carlo Libaridian is a seasoned professional in the luxury fashion and antiques industries. He began his career as a buyer for Neiman Marcus and later served as CEO of Shopbop, a leading online fashion retailer, where he played a pivotal role in its growth. After transitioning into the antiques sector, Libaridian founded Dorian Voyager, a company specializing in unique and rare collectibles. His expertise in curating and valuing fine antiques, combined with his e-commerce background, has made him a valuable partner in revitalizing Cornell Auctions. Libaridian describes his journey as “a life less linear,” reflecting his multi-faceted career and deep passion for antiques.
The Opportunity to Take Over
The opportunity to manage Cornell Auctions arose through a shared love for antiques and a connection to Bellport, a charming community both Braeger and Libaridian frequented. Introduced by a mutual friend, the two discovered their aligned interests and complementary skills, leading to their partnership in acquiring the auction house. Braeger’s background in event design and Libaridian’s experience in luxury fashion and antiques positioned them as ideal stewards of Cornell Auctions’ legacy.
Rebranding to Cornell Auctions, Objects & Trade
The decision to rebrand from Thos. Cornell Galleries to Cornell Auctions, Objects & Trade reflects the company’s expanded vision. The new name signifies a broader focus on auctions, fine objects, and trade opportunities while honoring the auction house’s 25-year legacy. The rebranding aims to attract a wider audience and modernize the business without losing the trust and expertise it has built over decades.
Early Success and Growth
Since taking over in September 2024, Braeger and Libaridian have overseen a series of successful auctions, achieving a remarkable 30 percent growth with each event. This consistent upward trend highlights their dedication to enhancing the auction experience, attracting new buyers, and expanding the range of offerings. Their ability to blend traditional auction practices with modern innovations has resonated with both longtime clients and newcomers.
Leveraging Social Media
A significant aspect of their strategy has been the effective use of social media, particularly Instagram, to grow their audience and drive sales. The @cornell_auctions Instagram account has become a key tool for showcasing curated items, engaging with followers, and building a strong brand identity. The platform has not only increased visibility but also brought a sense of authenticity and joy to the auction experience, aligning with the duo’s aesthetic and vision.
Favorite Finds and Future Outlook
One of their standout moments was the Lucky Charms Auction on March 15, 2025, where a vintage cocktail cart with a foldout rooster’s head and tail became a favorite piece, estimated at $200-$2,000. This unique item exemplifies their commitment to curating distinctive and collectible pieces that captivate buyers.
Looking ahead, Braeger and Libaridian aim to continue building on Cornell Auctions’ legacy by blending tradition with innovation. Their multifaceted backgrounds and shared passion for antiques position them to lead the business into a new era, offering exceptional experiences for collectors and enthusiasts alike. With their combined expertise and dedication, Cornell Auctions, Objects & Trade is poised to remain a trusted name in the world of fine auctions and collectibles.
