Summer is a great season to be a collector. Warmer temperatures and pleasant weather bring along a serious string of outdoor flea markets and antique shows, so what better time to get down to some buying and selling?

Plus, summer is a season for discovering your unexpected new favorites. While winter and autumn feature the usual holiday-related collectibles (which we absolutely love, of course), summer has so many sun-related accessories. From Edwardian swimwear to sunglasses, summer has all kinds of surprises for the collector who’s willing to think outside the box. Even the most mundane kitchen implements can spark a new collection.

vintage ice cream scoop with blade
There is a hidden blade!

Not that anyone would categorize this particular object shown in our video above as mundane. How could we when it has such a menacing blade? Although this might look like a tool that could pierce human flesh, it was actually designed to dig into rock-hard ice cream. And if the design isn’t enough to excite you, you should know that this ice cream scoop is especially hard to come by, and it sold for several thousand dollars when it last came to auction. For more on this one-of-a-kind piece (found in a Salvation Army warehouse), check out our conversation with WorthPoint®’s own Eric Bradley to read more about how he did his research and uncovered this scoop’s hidden value!

Always look for patent numbers.

But this isn’t the only ice cream scoop we love. If you take a quick look through the WorthPoint Price Guide, you’ll see that there’s an antique ice cream scoop for every aesthetic and every price. Who can say no to a scoop that talks? Or one that looks like a penguin? Watch our video with Eric to see one of our very favorite finds!
