This one is for you, resellers! Read on as I share My Top Ten eBay Sales of 2024.
My Story
For over 20 years, I have been both selling on eBay and working with clients. My client work involves both consignment and me buying lots of items outright. Still, sometimes, I end up with “mystery items” that have been in clients’ families for generations and with foggy histories (these items are perfect for plunking down on eBay). Also, keep in mind that I sell not just on eBay but also at three brick-and-mortar shops in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. 2024 was also a big “show & market” year for me, both in the summer and holiday seasons. Anyway, without further ado, here are my:
My Top Ten eBay Sales of 2024
1. February 2024 $1313.88 vintage Hamilton art deco 18K watch. I got this watch from a client, and like many vintage watches and electronic items, I sold it “As Is” and “As Found.” The watch was not running and not tested; I left it up to the new owner to deal with any repairs.
2. May 2024 $800.00 lot of eight Barbie Dolls from the Jewel Essence Collection. These dolls were all New In Box and never removed from their packaging. This sale is nothing compared to the amount of Barbies I sold in 2023, around the time of the Barbie movie release. Another one of my clients from recent years was a huge Barbie collector. I helped her move a lot of her collection to supplement her income.
3. January 2024 $679.99 Alamut & Lamasar book by W. Ivanow, published in 1960. I got this book from the estate of a Middle Eastern scholar. Over the past few years, I have been working with several other retired scholars to help them downsize their libraries. Many old books simply have no value these days, but one out of a hundred (like this one) is worth selling on the secondary market.
4. August 2024 $500.00 Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ohashi Bridge Atake woodblock print by Hirshige. Vintage and antique Japanese woodblock prints are tough to research and resell, as many examples and reproductions from different eras exist. However, if you have a fine early example, it can fetch a tremendous selling price.
5. July 2024 $511.70 Antique Chinese Sang de Boeuf Vase. Like the aforementioned Asian woodblock prints, Asian ceramics can be extremely tough to research and date. Luckily, Chinese sang de boeuf or oxblood ceramics always have good resale value. It is difficult to find them without their trademark deep maroon color and frequent crackle pattern glaze.
6. April 2024 $500.00 Antique 10K white gold and diamond art deco filigree bracelet. Vintage and antique jewelry always sells well for me, both online and in my physical storefronts. I love how small and easy to ship jewelry is, while I am not a fan of all the polishing and cleaning it sometimes requires. I also dread writing in teeny tiny letters on the price tags for jewelry in my storefronts.
7. August 2024 $400.00 Antique Rhodochrosite Pill or Snuff Box. It pays to research the stones you come across in your travels; as it turns out, Rhodochrosite is quite rare and is mainly found in Argentina. This tiny box had a few other things going for it other than the stone, though, as it also appealed to trinket box and snuff box collectors.
8. September 2024 $479.99. Antique Cambridge University Gonville & Caius College Stained Glass Panel. This glass panel is one of those items that I sold for a client with “no questions asked,” although I do wonder how they came into possession of a stained glass panel that looks like it came from a church window from Cambridge University in the UK. They did say that they got it from a relative, but in any event, it is now in the hands of a very happy customer in Pennsylvania.
9. April 2024 $400.00. “Pieces of Pompeii” pot shard lot. I actually think these were fresco fragments from Pompeii, but in any event, I was very glad to get these out of the house in case they brought bad luck. They were likely “acquired” from the archaeological site around the mid to late 19th century (yes, another client). As I recall, I shipped them out to someone’s home on the West Coast.
10. March 2024 $350.00 Larry Bird & Michaelrden at the Boston Garden, One of a Kind Photo Lot. Do you ever go into an estate sale and find a bunch of old photographs that everyone else is passing up? I do, and this time, I noticed this lot was from an important 1980s Celtics game featuring not just Larry Bird but also Michael Jordan. I sold just part of the lot for $350—a fine profit.
