A unique wristwatch by an iconic maker representing horological and motoring history is coming up for auction next month.

A circa 1948 gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual 5015 ‘Bubbleback’

The circa 1948 gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual 5015 ‘Bubbleback’ was presented to Sir (Harold) Stanford Cooper (1889-1976) on the occasion of his 30 years with Ford Motor Company Ltd, including Vice-Chairmanship.

Sir Harold, was knighted in 1945 and served as a Managing Director of The Ford Motor Company until stepping down in 1947 to co-ordinate the activities of Associated Companies in Europe and Africa.

During the war, he served on the Scott Committee on Land Utilisation in Rural Areas.

The watch bears a presentation inscription on the rear. Consigned by a private client, it is estimated to fetch £2,000-4,000 when it comes up at Cotswold Auctioneers Kinghams on February 12.

The ‘Bubbleback’, was Rolex’s first self-winding water resistant wrist watch, the addition of the self-winding assembly to a manual wind movement led to the distinctive profile of the case back and the watch’s nickname.
