Formula 1’s popularity soared thanks to its Netflix docuseries, and now its marquee driver is making record waves in memorabilia.
Early in December, Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 Chrome Superfractor Autograph, a one-of-a-kind card, set a record by becoming the first million-dollar sale in its category.
The sale came through P1Castle Premium Consignment and was announced on the company’s Instagram account.
The Hamilton piece comes from one of the first dedicated F1 trading card series. The two sides signed their first agreement in 2020 and renewed it in March 2024.
“This is an amazing day for the Formula 1 card hobby and we are honored to have been a part of it,” said P1Castle CEO/Owner Scott Kleinklaus in an interview with WorthPoint. “We hope the sale encourages other F1 fans to enter the space and gives current Formula 1 collectors an optimistic outlook towards the future of the F1 hobby.”
While Kleinklaus did not reveal the buyer, he did note that his company is going to extra lengths to ensure the valuable card’s delivery. “We flew down to Florida to pick up the card in person from the seller and are headed to Singapore at the end of this year to deliver the card by hand to the buyer,” he stated.
Hamilton, 39, is arguably the biggest name in F1’s modern era. He co-holds the record for most Championship titles in F1 history with Michael Schumacher while standing alone as the career leader in wins, pole positions, and podium finishes. Among other accolades, he was knighted in 2021.
Topps F1 Chrome was one of two series released during the first year of the agreement between the two organizations (the other being Dynasty).
