Since her debut on the world’s toy stage in 1959, Barbie has become so much more than just a doll. For generations, she’s been a true childhood icon, not to mention a consummate professional with hundreds of career titles to her name. A woman with so many identities, skills, outfits, and brightly colored cars, Barbie gives her fans a lot to love (and collect!).
Like our beloved Barbie, Kathleen Guzman is another woman with many hats to wear. Although you may know her best from Antiques Roadshow, Kathleen has spent decades working for renowned auction houses like Christie’s and Heritage. She also happens to be a member of the WorthPoint® Board of Directors.
Which means we get to go thrifting with her.
Kathleen brings a wealth of invaluable experience and knowledge to the company. How could we be anything less than thrilled about digging through a Salvation Army warehouse with her and seeing all the great finds that catch her eye? And just in time for the Barbie movie, Kathleen found something extra special: not one, but two beautiful Barbies still in their boxes!
As we shopped, Kathleen gave a bit of backstory on this mighty plastic icon. Although a Barbie dolls have sold for high figures in decades past, the doll’s prices have been flagging in recent years. Even with all of her skills, professions, and celebrity iterations, Barbie’s market has been lagging for years, and the collecting world has wondered if Barbie can make any kind of comeback. Will her resale prices ever turn around? With Barbie movie mania in the air (and all over the airwaves), perhaps the time is right for a little bit of bright pink resurgence.
But, even if Barbie never returns to her peak popularity, we’re still pretty impressed with Kathleen’s warehouse discoveries. Finding two Barbies in their original boxes in a bin of toy donations is an incredible discovery. To learn more about the values of these Barbies, join the shopping trip with Kathleen and watch the video above. Plus, keep your eye on the WorthPoint Insider newsletter for more of Kathleen’s amazing finds.
