On February 7, 2024, Butterscotch Auction conducted a successful online-only auction featuring 212 lots of Art Deco and vintage jewelry, perfume bottles, art glass, and book-form objects from the collection of Lynn and Bruce Heckman, alongside additional items from other estates. The sale achieved a 90 percent sell-through rate, totaling $123,160. The Heckmans, prominent contributors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, had their collection showcased at the museum, with several pieces from their estate attracting significant attention at the auction.
The top lot of the sale was a 14K yellow gold double curb link necklace from the Heckman collection, weighing 84.1 grams. The necklace, which featured a 14K mark on its hidden box clasp and measured 16½ inches long, sold for $5,024, surpassing its $3,000-$4,000 estimate. The winning bidder was a local private collector.
Jewelry dominated the sale, with a mixed lot of 21 pieces of vintage ladies’ jewelry from the Heckman collection fetching $3,302, far exceeding its $100-$300 estimate. This lot included bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and pendants and went to a bidder in San Francisco, California. Other notable jewelry highlights included:
- A pair of antique 14K gold pendant earrings with faceted pink stones, which sold for $3,048.
- A three-piece Georg Jensen set featuring moonstone and sterling silver jewelry, including a necklace, pendant earrings, and clip earrings, all marked “Denmark,” which earned $2,477.
Decorative objects also performed well, with a pair of carved Valentine baskets, likely sailor art, selling for $3,125 against a $100-$300 estimate. The larger basket was marked “Salem” and featured a whale and floral bouquet design, while the smaller one was inscribed “to my love.” Another standout lot was a set of 13 wooden snuff boxes, 10 of which were heart-shaped, including one with mother-of-pearl inlay and another inscribed “to my love.” The lot, which also included a heart-shaped miniature picture frame, sold for $1,397.
Perfume bottles were another highlight, with a lot of 14 small perfume bottles from the Heckman collection fetching $1,270. The group included a variety of designs, such as an engine-turned enamel bottle and silver-overlay bottles with floral motifs.
Books and book-shaped objects also attracted significant interest. A portfolio of lithographs by Jacques Lassaigne titled Douze Contemporains (1959) sold for $1,952, featuring works by artists like Braque, Derain, and Vlamnick, though it was missing prints by Picasso and Leger. Additionally, a lot of five English silver book-form vinaigrettes from the 18th and 19th centuries sold for $1,250, just over its $500-$1,000 estimate.
Furniture and folk art pieces were also well-received. An early 19th-century American folk art inlaid tall case clock sold for $1,952, exceeding its $200-$400 estimate. The clock, which descended through a distinguished Westchester family, measured 93 inches high and featured inlaid birds and fluted columns. Another notable furniture piece was an early 19th-century Gustavian bow-front painted chest with provenance to the Aline Elwes McDonnell Trust, which sold for $2,032. The black-painted chest was adorned with floral sprigs, lion heads, and acanthus leaf decorations.
A 9-foot-long Nain Persian silk carpet, characterized by its fine weave and medallion design within an indigo field, sold for $1,397, more than double its high estimate. The rug, dated to the late 20th century, had provenance from a prominent Armonk, New York, doctor.
Brendan B. Ryan, appraiser and auctioneer at Butterscotch, expressed satisfaction with the sale’s outcome, noting strong competition among bidders. The next Butterscotch auction, scheduled for March 23, will feature an additional 42 lots from the Heckman collection, alongside fine and decorative arts. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
