Curiosity can be an amazing thing—consider the story of a plumber who recently discovered a multimillion-dollar treasure during a basement renovation in Vienna, Austria.

During the renovation, the plumber saw a rope on the basement floor. When he tugged on the rope, he couldn’t pull it free, prompting him to investigate further by digging into the concrete around the rope with a shovel.

Ultimately, the plumber’s digging was successful. Beneath the concrete, he found a metal box containing 66 lbs. of gold coins. According to Greek Reporter, the coins feature images of legendary Austrian composer Mozart and could be worth $2.4 million.

Had others explored their curiosity surrounding the rope like the plumber, they may have made the discovery earlier.

Greek Reporter indicated that a builder was at the property the day before the plumber arrived for the renovation. This builder noticed the rope but chose to ignore it. Previously, other builders had been in the basement and seen the rope but decided not to dig into the concrete around it.

Some experts told Greek Reporter that the coins were likely buried during World War II. At this point, wealthy Europeans would hide their valuables. Thus, the coins may have been buried due to concerns about them being lost or stolen.

In Austria, a treasure discovery can be split between the individual who finds it and the property owner. Based on this, the plumber could receive over $1 million for his coin discovery.
