Archaeologists recently unearthed gold and silver jewelry that may date back to the fourth century, according to Greek Reporter. The jewelry was found during a burial site excavation in Europe’s Crimea peninsula.

The jewelry discovery includes brooches, earrings, belts, and shoe buckles. Archaeologists continue to investigate the discovery and learn more about the jewelry. To date, they have noted that the items were well-preserved.

For example, the earrings at the burial site were made of gold plate with precious stones. This is considered to be “quite unique,” Arthur Nabokov, a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology of Crimea at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Greek Reporter. “There are few earrings of this kind in Crimea. Most likely, these earrings were imported,” Nabokov stated.

Along with the jewelry, archaeologists found gold leaf applique decorations at a second burial site in Crimea. These may have been used as part of the neckline for a dress.

In addition, archaeologists discovered a decorated “pyxis,” a container constructed out of an animal horn that may have been used to store powdered makeup, at one of the burial sites. This and the other items found at the burial sites indicate that the area may have had wealthy inhabitants.

“Most likely, in both vaults where the items were found, rich women were buried,” Nabokov said.

These excavations were part of one of the longest-lasting archaeological projects in Crimea. Future excavations could lead to the discovery of jewelry and other medieval artifacts that provide additional insights into the area’s history.
