A first-edition proof copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (referred to as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States) was recently sold at auction for $13,900.
According to the Associated Press, someone bought the book at a south London bookstore in 1997. This individual purchased the book as a “throw-in” alongside two others, paying approximately 50 cents for them.
Following the purchase, the AP reported that the buyer did not pay much attention to the book. However, this individual eventually discovered the Harry Potter phenomenon, along with the high prices of some of the first copies of books from the series. The buyer put the first-edition Harry Potter book up for auction through Hansons Auctioneers, and an unnamed individual from the United Kingdom purchased it.
This particular Harry Potter book is a unique copy that includes things readers will have difficulty finding in other versions. In addition to an unofficial cover, the book’s inside title page lists the author’s name as “J A Rowling” instead of J.K. Rowling, said Jim Spencer, head of books at Hansons Auctioneers.
In September 1998, Scholastic published Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States. The first printing of the book included 50,000 copies. Since then, that first book has led to more than 500 million books in the franchise sold globally, including over 180 million in the United States.
