For decades, a Romanian homeowner used a stone she found in a stream bed as a doorstop. Little did she know that stone was an amber nugget worth over $1 million.
Oddly enough, the homeowner experienced a break-in at one point. The criminals stole gold jewelry but left behind the doorstop—the most valuable object in the home.
According to EL PAIS, the stone mentioned above is one of the largest amber nuggets in the world and has been valued at around €1 million (approximately $1.1 million).
Daniel Costache, Director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau, noted that the nugget “represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level.” At this point, the nugget remains in the museum’s possession.
In 1991, a relative of the Romanian homeowner inherited the residence. After examining the rock closely and believing it could be a semi-precious stone, this individual sold it to the Romanian state, which classified the rock as a national treasure.
From here, Romanian authorities let specialists at the Museum of History in Krakow, Poland, evaluate the stone. They verified the stone’s authenticity and estimated it could be between 38.5 and 70 million years old.
Several amber nuggets have been discovered in the area where the Romanian homeowner lived. These nuggets come in 160 shades of color, ranging from red to black. Some contain fossil remains from beetles, flies, reptiles, and other species.
