The hammer price for the rare one-inch campaign jugate more than doubled its pre-sale estimate at Hake’s Premiere Auction.

YORK, Pa. – A one-inch version of the elusive 1920 Cox/Roosevelt jugate button, one of only six of its type known to exist, sold for $100,300 at Hake’s March 21-22 Premier Auction.

Likely a salesman’s sample, the political pin-back button was the most highly prized piece in the legendary John Hilhouse collection. Pre-sale estimates ranged between $35,000-$50,000.

Hake’s now holds the world record for selling the top three pinback buttons at auction, including a 1.25-inch Cox/Roosevelt jugate that sold for $185,850 in 2022 and an oversize “Drink Alpen Brau” pictorial button depicting the 1916 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox with a 21-year-old Babe Ruth that sold for $62,980 in 2020.

The oversize 6-inch button depicting the 1916 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox sold for $62,980 at Hake’s Auction in 2020. What makes the button so special is not only the fact that it’s the only 1916 World Series Championship button known to exist, with graphics depicting and identifying the manager and 24 teammates from the winning Red Sox team, but that it includes a 21-year-old Babe Ruth, who was then a budding young pitching and hitting star.

“We thought the Cox/Roosevelt jugate in this sale had a good shot at challenging the high estimate, but we did not see it doubling that number – an incredible result,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Auctions. “It is a clear indication of how strong the political memorabilia market is and how many collectors are willing to pay above-estimate prices for genuinely rare items.”

James Cox, the Democratic nominee for president in 1920, left, and his running mate, Franklin D. Roosevelt. This rare Cox/Roosevelt pin-back campaign button, a mere 1 ¼-inch, sold for an unprecedented $185,850 at Hake’s Auctions March 15, 2022.
