A pair of Elizabeth Frink pictures of horse are set to sell in Cheltenham in March.
An etching and aquatint of a horse rolling over, estimated at £1,500 to £2,000, and Man and Horse III, a lithograph estimated at £700 to £800, feature in The Cotswold Auction Company’s March sale of Modern Art and Design, Vintage Fashion and Textiles.
Elizabeth Frink (1930–1993) was renowned as a sculptor and printmaker, particularly for her striking sculptural figures of men and acutely-observed prints of horses.
Work by P J Crook also features strongly in the sale, with several pictures by the local Cheltenham-based artist set to be offered. The highlight of these is a large acrylic on canvas entitled The Angel, The Lion and The Infants, estimated at £1,500 to £2,500.
Crook’s work often features on album covers by progressive rock band King Crimson, fronted by guitar innovator Robert Fripp.
The auction also boasts work by Belarus-born artist Marc Chagall (1887- 1985), featuring an etching of two female figures entitled L’Envolee, estimated at £700 to £800, and by English painter and printmaker John Piper. Piper was an official war artist during the Second World War – his depictions of bomb-damaged churches and other landmarks turned him into a household name.
Director Elizabeth Poole said: “We have a very strong selection of pictures in our next specialist modern art and design sale. We are delighted to be selling work by such well-known names as Elizabeth Frink and Marc Chagall, as well as the prominent local artist P J Crook.”
The sale will take place at The Cotswold Auction Company’s saleroom in Cheltenham on March 19.
