LONE JACK, MO. — On Sunday, December 10, Soülis Auctions offered nearly 200 Mid-Americana items, including folk, tramp, outsider and Native American art as well as country furniture and accessories. Among a large selection of quilts, trade signs and shooting targets, bidders were presented with a significant collection of weathervanes, one of which became the top lot of the auction. A large copper and iron dairy cow attributed to Boston-based A.J. Harris and Company (1868-1882) earned $22,300 with buyer’s premium ($5/7,000). The bovine, measuring 25½ by 38 by 7½ inches, came from a private collection in Denver, Colo., and was in very good condition. Despite being from the Nineteenth Century and showing signs of outdoor wear, a good portion of the original gilt surface is visible among sections of verdigris and oxidation. A more extensive review of the sale will be in a forthcoming issue.
