Buyers were eyeing up a rare Georgian treasure at auction recently – but might have left wondering whether it was watching them.
The Georgian lover’s eye pendant was among the top selling lots in The Cotswold Auction Company’s most recent sale of Silver, Jewellery, Watches, Asian and Whisky.
The pendant hammered down for the eye-watering sum of £1,550, leaving stunned onlookers rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
Director Lindsey Braune said: “There was a huge amount of interest in the Georgian eye pendant. It was one of our most watched lots on The Saleroom website, though buyers must have been wondering whether it was watching them!
“Jewellery lots were among our top sellers this time round, with a string of freshwater pearls on an 18-carat gold and jade clasp leading the pack at an incredible £8,500.
“A Faraone Milano 18-carat gold, emerald and sapphire mounted compact also sold for a substantial sum, at £5,100.”
She added: “Silver performed strongly, including a 1921 Sheffield silver table service by Oswin and Co, which sold for £2,200.”
A set of six Georgian Chippendale style mahogany dining chairs with period wool work embroidered seats sold for £2,500, well above their estimate of £400 to £600.
In excellent condition for their age, dated 1747, the tapestry seat covers each featured a flower-filled urn bearing family arms. The armorial was a variant on Spens of Lathallan, Fife, or Spence, used by the family from the 16th century until circa 1767.
The sale was held at The Cotswold Auction Company’s Cirencester saleroom on Tuesday, April 9th and Wednesday, April 10th.
