One of the sports card world’s best-known names has a new lead.
On December 17, Collēctīvus Holdings announced that it would serve as an umbrella company, overseeing Beckett. It has also acquired Dragon Shield, a memorabilia supply company, and Southern Hobby Distribution.
“When you look across the three Collēctīvus brands you find the most sought-after labels in all collecting, the highest quality sleeves in TCG, and the most knowledgeable sales team in The Hobby,” said Scott Stroud, CMO of Collēctīvus Holdings, in a press release.“With the added ability to further invest in all our brands, 2025 is looking like a record year.”
Beckett started as a price guide publisher in 1984, led by its namesake founder, Dr. James Beckett. At its peak of popularity, Beckett was considered the source for pricing information for the sports card market.
Beckett expanded its services in 1999, creating Beckett Grading Services (BGS). Quickly, the company gained solid standing in the fledgling market. However, its status has faltered in recent years as competitors emerged.
As a sample, statistics from GemRate.com showed (above) that on December 22, BGS graded 1,700 cards. By comparison, the industry leader, PSA, graded 65,100 cards. CGC and SGC each graded more than 10,000 cards.
To sum it all up: “We’re thrilled. It’s truly a new beginning,” said Kevin Isaacson, CEO of Collēctīvus Holdings.
